Spring Jam returns to Squaw Valley
Spring Jam III, Squaw Valley USA’s annual spring festival combines halfpipe, skiercross, boardercross, and big air competitions, plenty of classic California sunshine and the annual Lake Cushing Classic, Saturday and Sunday.
Beginning Saturday at 11 a.m., snowboarders take to Squaw Valley’s upper mountain Cross Course as heats of four competitors race simultaneously through a course filled with obstacles, banks, s-turns and huge tabletop jumps. Following the high-speed racing, the action shifts to the air as skiers and snowboarders fly high in Squaw Valley’s Central Park during the Kahlua Halfpipe Jam at 1 p.m. The events are open to all ages, and the best run of the jam wins $200 cash.
Lake Tahoe’s original pond crossing, the Lake Cushing Classic starts at 3 p.m. This wacky snow and water event prompts even the most sensible of skiers and snowboarders to don the equipment of their choice in an attempt to cross the 40 degree waters of Lake Cushing.
The goal is to maneuver down a snow ramp and make it to the opposite side of the lake without falling. The Kahlua apres-ski party and awards ceremonies for all the day’s events takes place at Bar One in the Olympic House immediately following the Cushing Classic.
Sunday morning begins as skiers take their turn on the Cross Course at 11 a.m., followed by the skier and boarder big air events at 3:30 p.m. Competitors are judged on the height, distance, style and difficulty of their jumps off a specially designed kicker. At the end of the day, the Volant Dash-4-Cash offers spectators a chance to win $100. The awards ceremony and party takes place immediately following the event.
To register for the skiercross, boardercross, halfpipe and skier or boarder big air events, visit http://www.squaw.com or register on Saturday and Sunday morning from 8 to 9 a.m. by Dave’s Deli in the Olympic House. Costs are $25 for one event and $15 for each additional competition and entry fees do not include lift tickets. There is no entry fee for the Kahlua Halfpipe Jam. Helmets are mandatory for all participants in all events.
The Lake Cushing Classic registration takes place on the deck outside Bar One at the Olympic House from 1 to 3 p.m. The entry fee for the crossing is $15 and helmets and life preservers are required for all entrants. For all Spring Jam events a legal guardian must accompany competitors under 18 years of age.
All events are open to the viewing public.
