SPRING PREVIEW: Wolverine swimmers dive into competition
Wolverine varsity swim team coach Amy Anderson won’t be spending too much time treading water this season, as her team prepares for their first meet this Saturday after only two weeks of training time.
“Swimming is an intense sport and takes several weeks of training to achieve a good base for competition. With only two weeks to train before our first meet, we are very proud of our swimmers and of all the hard work they have already put in both in the pool and out of the pool with our dry land training,” said Anderson.
While the 2001 TTHS team is largely made up of young swimmers, they are looking to perform very strongly this season thanks to the return of several strong competitors.
Only two members of the team graduated last year, leaving Anderson with an experienced school of athletes.
Freshman Leslie Ajari, who competes year-round and often places at the national level in many of her events, will make a tremendous asset to the high school team this year. Ajari’s brother Wesley, a junior and decorated competitor, will also pack some punch into the Wolverines’ roster after competing strongly in the off-season.
Another sibling pair, Aaron and Lauren Browning, have been hitting the pool all year and promise to keep Truckee at the top of the pack along with other veterans Josh Burgess, Lindsey Collin, Haley Long and Nikolai Travis.
Both Wesley Ajari and Lauren Browning attended the State Championships last year and placed in the top four among Nevada’s finest aquatic competitors.
Returning seniors Robyn Moore, Joe Dahlen and Nikolai Travis all competed in the 2000 Zone Championship and are expected to repeat as competitors this season.
“It is going to be exciting to see their hard work pay off,” Anderson replied.
The individual nature of swimming makes it nearly impossible to predict where the toughest competition will hail from, as swimmers can change considerably from one season to the next.
“We will just have to see what happens,” Anderson said. The Wolverine swimmers will travel to South Tahoe March 10 to face the Wooster Colts.
