Now in its 34th year, the historic Squaw Mountain Run is expected to draw more than 500 runners when it returns to the slopes of Squaw Valley on Saturday, Aug. 2.

The fundraising run starts at the 6,200-foot base of Squaw Valley and climbs 3.6 miles up Mountain Run to High Camp, at 8,200 feet.

The event benefits junior cross-country skiing programs and the Gene Upshaw Memorial Tahoe Forest Cancer Center.

The mass start begins at 9 a.m. at the bottom of the Mountain Run next to the Funitel building. There are two aid stations on the course with water and energy bars supplied by Clif Bar.

At the High Camp finish, runners and hikers are treated to a post-race party with light food, beer, music, awards, a raffle and a 2014 Squaw Mountain Run glass mug. Each participant and volunteer receives a ride down the tram.

Hikers looking for a more leisurely way to participate can sign up for the wildflower hike, which includes a round-trip tram ride and post-race party. The wildflower hike begins and finishes at High Camp.

Registration is open by mail until July 25 and online at squawmountainrun.com. Participants may also register on Friday, Aug. 1, from 4-7 p.m. and on race day from 7-8:30 a.m. in front of the ticket windows in the Village.

Liability waivers are required and parents must sign for minors under age 18. Squaw Mountain Run Salomon Tech Shirts in different colors and sizes will be available on a first-come, first-served basis for $30 at the race registration.
