Squaw Valley skiers attend U.S. camp

U.S. Ski Team Reports

A blue-chip cross-section of the nation’s top junior Alpine racers, including Squaw Valley Ski Team members Jake Perkins, Keith Moffat, Nick Daniels, Bryce Bennett and Sean Higgins, were invited by the U.S. Ski Team to participate in the National Development System (NDS) camp at Mt. Hood’s Timberline Ski Area from June 5-15.

The young skiers underwent intensive training on snow and off with a collection of coaches from the U.S. Ski Team and club programs.

U.S. Competition Director Walt Evans said one of the primary goals in the 10-day NDS camp was to complement the training the athletes have received in their home programs.

“They’ve shown they can perform, so we wanted this National Development System camp to build on what they’ve already learned at home,” Evans said.

“I’m expecting two or three of these boys and girls to emerge for the Junior World Championships Team in 2009, and move onto our Development Team.”

With one NDS graduate (Stacey Cook of Truckee) on the 2006 Olympic Team, Evans expects to have NDS graduates on the 2014 Olympic Team. The site for the ’14 Games will be announced July 4 by the International Olympic Committee.
