KIRKWOOD, Calif. and#8212; Squaw Valley snowboarders made their presence felt on the final stop of the North Face Masters of Snowboarding series held at Kirkwood this past Friday and Saturday.

Iris Lazzareschi of Squaw impressed the judges on Day 2 with a line to the looker’s right of The Cirque into the upper Harnell’s section, down to Frank’s alternate before airing into the top, and finishing with an air out of the trees at the bottom. She received a winning score of 88.3, which was good enough to beat out Alaskan Callan Chythlook-Sifsof’s runner-up score of 85.67.

It was bittersweet victory for Lazzareschi, however, as she also captured first place at the Crystal Mountain, Wash., tour stop only to be edged by a single point for the overall series by Mt. Baker’s Maria DeBari, who finished third at Kirkwood.

and#8220;Year after year, the riders just keep getting better,and#8221; said snowboarding legend and head judge Tom Burt of Kings Beach. and#8220;The competitiveness of the tour is off the charts. With the top two women being separated by only one point, and the overall winner for both men and women being anyone’s game until the very end, it made for an exciting end to a great year.and#8221;

While Lazzareschi represented her resort well in the women’s competition, three Squaw Valley snowboarders finished among the top five on the men’s side, and five finished in the top 10.

Ralph Backstrom led the Squaw contingent with a second-place finish behind Aaron Robinson of Montana. Andrew Irwin was third as Christopher Galvin and Moss Holladay tied for fifth and Dave Brumm placed 10th. Brian Bozack, who rides out of Sugar Bowl, took seventh.

Robinson’s run was fast and fluid as he hit a natural feature in the middle of the venue for a big, floaty air. He hit a spine at the bottom and threw a large frontside 360 to finish with a winning score of 91.33.

Backstrom received a runner-up score of 89.33 as he also was second in overall tour points. Irwin took third with a score of 87.00.

Among other local competitors, Anna Weber from the North Shore placed 10th in the women’s contest, while on the men’s side, Jeremy Jacobson and Greg Terziev, both of whom claim the and#8220;Tahoe Backcountryand#8221; as their home mountain, placed 11th and 13th, respectively, followed by Squaw’s Josh Feliciano in 16th and Curtis Woodman in 19th.

Competing against 70 snowboarders on Day 1, Galvin managed to wade his way through the field to come out on top with a score of 83.67. His run included multiple drops and smooth turns throughout the venue. Backstrom finished right on his heels only one point behind, as he put down a run that included several well-linked drops with smooth, fluid turns.

The North Face Masters of Snowboarding series began at Snowbird, Utah, before swinging through Crystal Mountain and ending at Kirkwood. For complete results go to http://www.thenorthfacemasters.com.
