North Shore’s own Wesley Steinkopff earned an invitation to the California State Ice Hockey Championships after his Lake Tahoe Grizzlies Squirt B team finished second at the Northern California Championships last weekend.

The Lake Tahoe Grizzlies, which are based out of South Lake Tahoe, opened the tournament Friday with a 5-0 shutout against Roseville’s Capital Thunder, in which Steinkopff recorded an assist on the third goal.

The Grizzlies then followed with a 7-2 win against the Sharks of San Jose on Saturday morning to clinch a berth in the state championship, as well as a date with undefeated Tri Valley for the NorCal title.

In a closely contested game, Tri Valley broke a 2-2 tie with two goals in the third period to capture the championship.

Lake Tahoe will play Tri Valley, Bakersfield and Anaheim in a four-team, round-robin tournament this weekend. The two top seeds play for the state championship on Sunday, April 11.
