Sugar Bowl skiers go to Junior Olympics

Submitted to the Sun

Fourteen racers from the Sugar Bowl Ski Team and Academy qualified for the Western Region Junior Olympics (ages 13 and 14) in Mt. Hood Meadows, Ore. on March 24-26. They were part of a 44-member team from the Far West Ski Association.

Michael Radford led the team with four medals in four events.

A Sugar Bowl Academy student, Radford secured the men’s combined title by taking first, second and third in slalom, giant slalom and super-G. With these results, Radford has been selected to the 18-member (nine boys and nine girls) United States Team competing in the Whistler Cup in early April.

The Whistler Cup is a junior event with Alpine skiers representing 38 countries from around the globe. Additionally, several other Sugar Bowl Ski Team athletes produced strong results.

Mark Engel took 10th in giant slalom and 12th in super-G while teammate Robert Pulford skied into 11th in the slalom and 12th in the giant slalom. On the women’s side, Kristina Ress put together two stellar finishes, landing fourth in the super-G and 13th in slalom.

Those mentioned above were also joined by Sugar Bowl skiers Gabby Hall, Shannon Conroy, Katie Fitzpatrick, Jacqui Lebel, Zoe Fiorio, Graham Collins, Frank Gibbs, Jake Scannell, James Clifford and Russell Kennedy.
