Swap meet raises funds for BMXers

The Truckee Donner Park and Rec. will hold its first annual bike and summer sports equipment swap May 10 at the community center. Check-in time for any gear being sold is from 7:30-10 a.m., with the swap itself running from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost is $1 for adults and free for kids.

The swap aims to raise money in order to staff and operate Truckee’s BMX course for the 2003 season. The hours of operation for the course are Tuesday and Thursday 5-7 p.m., with the first practice being held May 1, weather permitting. The cost of using the track is $3, or a punch card can be purchased for $25 allowing 10 days of riding.

Races will be held on Saturdays with a 1:30 p.m. sign-up and a 3 p.m. race time. Thursday evening races will also be held once school is out. The first race is planned for May 17.

Before any of the racing can begin, the tracks are in need of a lot of work. The first work party is April 28 at 8 a.m. Projects will include laying clay and dirt over the surface of the track, fixing starting gates, and many other general improvements.

TDRPD is also looking for volunteers to help at the races. The Truckee BMX Web site is located off of the TTRPD web site. For further information call Dan O’ Gorman at 587-0647 or Bill Palmer at 587-9158.
