The Tahoe Yacht Club will take over Stampede Reservoir this weekend, as the club closes its competitive racing for the year with the annual Tahoe Laser Fleet Championships.

The event is open to all Laser Standard, Laser Radial, and Laser Pico boats, bringing some of Northern California’s finest sailors to the reservoir just northeast of Truckee for three days of sailing.

The championship also serves as the third-to-last stop of the Svendsen’s Grand Prix sailing series.

“It’s a really popular event because there’s typically a reliable breeze, and flat water,” said Commodore Rick Raduziner. “We love it there because the wind comes up a little earlier, and this time of year there’s very few people on the lake.”

The club is expecting roughly 30 boats for the competition, said Raduziner, with last year’s even drawing over 30 vessels to the reservoir.

The racing will get underway on Friday, Sept. 8, with a non-competitive fun sail, taking place around 4 p.m. The evening’s sailing will be followed by a $5 taco feed and bonfire. Camping is also available at Logger Camp Ground for the first 45 campers at a rate of $10.

The competitive sailing will get underway the following day at 2 p.m., and will be followed by a bonfire and celebration that night.

The finals will take place on Sunday, Sept. 10, at 1 p.m. with an awards ceremony to follow.

“We have 10 races in two days,” Raduziner said. “Everybody tends to camp out over the weekend; it’s a wonderful family event.”

The club’s junior race team, which was formed earlier in the year, will also be competing at the championships.

Summer Sailing Series

The club recently wrapped up its Summer Sailing Series with champions crowned after 21 races over seven weeks of competition.

In the Summer Laser Series A Fleet, Dan Hauserman took the series title with a low score of 46 points, and took wins in four of the races. Stan Eriksson, who won the Spring Series title, was second with 51 points. Eriksson took first places in five of the races. Raduziner rounded out the top-three finishers with 66 points. He’d win two races in the series.

In the Laser B Fleet, Ingrid Roske picked up the series championship with 27 points over 21 races. Roske won nine races, and finished no worse than fifth place during the series. Andrew Bourke was second with 33 points, followed by Maxwell Roske with 36 points. The three sailors accounted for every first-place finish of the series. Bourke would also finish in second place at the conclusion of the Spring Laser B Fleet Series.

The club’s other series, the Summer Beer Can Series, also concluded last week with Gary Redelberger capturing first place out of the Performance Handicap Racing Fleet Division 1. Redelberger picked up wins in four of the 10 races, including the final two, to edge Spring Beer Can Series winner Richard Courcier by two points. Dick Ferris finished in third place.

In Division 2 racing, Hauserman backed up his win in the Summer Laser Series with a first-place finish in the Summer Beer Can series, finishing with a low score of 10 points. Hauserman won six races, and finished no worse than second place. Hauserman was also the Division 2 Beer Can Series winner last spring.

Ryan Conner was second with 18 points, followed by Bryce Griffith with 21 points.

In Division 3, John Morrison captured the win behind six, first-place finishes to finish with a low score of 10 points. Blake Hoffmann was next with 25 points, followed by Ben Tallarigo with 28 points. For full results visit TahoeYC.com.
