Take a hike at Squaw Valley USA

The new Squaw Valley USA Hiking Center at High Camp offers a variety of guided and self-guided hikes on the resorts upper mountain including Sunset Hikes, Ranger Hikes, Full Moon Hikes and new this summer, daily guided hikes.High Camp, at the top of the Cable Car, is an ideal trailhead for mountain exploration, and by riding the Cable Car to 8200-feet, guests can easily access the beautiful views from Squaws mountain peaks without the long hike up from the bottom. Daily hikes New this season, Squaw Valley is offering daily hikes that begin at noon from High Camp. Knowledgeable guides provide a wealth of information about the geology, flowers, trees and animals native to the region as well as Squaw Valley history and environmental projects currently underway at the resort.Guides tailor the route each day depending on the mountain, weather and abilities of the group. These hikes cover moderately difficult terrain and are not recommended for small children or first time hikers. The fee for daily hikes is $5. A Cable Car & Hike Package costs $24 for adults, $20 for juniors and seniors and $5 for kids 12 and under. Full moon hikes Back by popular demand are the guided full moon hikes, offering guests the opportunity to walk to Squaw Valleys majestic peaks under the glow of the full moon. Hikers are treated to inspiring views as the moon rises slowly over Lake Tahoe and the Sierra.The moderate level hikes last roughly three hours and guests are free to explore and walk at their own pace. The hikes begin from High Camp at approximately 6:30 p.m. and cost $5 for adults and juniors and are free for kids 12 and under.An evening Cable Car & Hike Package is $14 for adults, juniors and seniors. Children ride the Cable Car for just $5. Sturdy shoes and warm clothes are recommended, and guests are encouraged to bring water and a flashlight. Scheduled Full Moon hikes for the 2004 summer take place June 30 July 2, July 29-31 and August 26-29, 2004. Sunset hikes Squaw Valley has also expanded the evening hiking options to include weekly guided Sunset Hikes. Almost every Friday and Saturday evening all summer, guests may join one of these guided hikes and experience the peace, tranquility and beauty of the upper mountain in the evening twilight. Hikes begin at 6:30 p.m. at High Camp and cost $5 for adults and juniors and are free for kids 12 and under. An evening Cable Car & Hike Package is $14 for adults, juniors and seniors. Children ride the Cable Car for just $5. Sunset Hikes are scheduled for July 9 & 10, 16 & 17, 23 & 24, August 6 & 7, 13 & 14, August 20 & 21 and September 3 & 4.

Sunday Nature/Ranger hikes Squaw Valley also offers four special Sunday Nature/Ranger Hikes. These hikes take guests on a tour of the natural vegetation and evolution of the area while exploring the fields of wildflowers and rocky ridges of the upper mountain with longtime resident and Forest Ecologist Bob Wright. His unique perspective offers an interesting tour of Squaw Valleys upper mountain. Ranger Hikes begin at noon and are scheduled for July 11 & 25 and August 8 & 22. Exploring Hikers looking to explore on their own also have many options. Those interested in a short and easy route can enjoy the one-mile High Camp Loop or the one-mile trail from High Camp to the top of Gold Coast and back. Other hikes include trails to some of Squaw Valleys six Sierra peaks. These self-guided hikes begin just outside High Camp and complimentary maps are available.Access to Squaw Valleys network of trails is free with a cable car ticket, and all guided hikes cost $5 for adults and juniors and are free for kids 12 and under. All hikers are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes, bring water and a snack, and dress appropriately. Cable Car tickets are $19 for adults, $15 for juniors age 13-15 and seniors 65-75 and $5 for children age 4-21. Kids 3 and under are free. After 5 p.m., value prices are $9 for adults, seniors and juniors and $5 for children.Box lunches and evening snacks are available at the Headwall Caf in the Cable Car lobby or at High Camp.
