Talented field slated to compete in annual Incline lacrosse tourney
More than 60 lacrosse teams from around the country will gather in Incline Village this weekend for the annual Lake Tahoe Lacrosse Tournament.
The fundraising event, sponsored by High Sierra Lacrosse (HSL) Foundation, will feature a men’s, women’s and, in its inaugural year, a masters’ division. It takes place Friday through Sunday at Village Green and Incline High School.
“This is our 24th year for the adult tournament, and our biggest ever,” said director and HSL Foundation Treasurer Curt Wegener, adding that there will be 16 women’s teams, 32 men’s teams and five masters’ teams.
The Adrenaline Tropics out of San Diego enter the tournament as the three-time defending champs. They’ll have to get through many high-caliber teams to earn a fourth straight title, including a squad from Marin County that fields players from Duke University, Wegener said.
The local team, the Tahoe Dawgs, also will be in the mix.
“There’s going to be a lot of talented teams this weekend,” Wegener said.
The first half of the tournament, the high school division, took place last weekend and featured 10 teams from the Bay Area, San Diego, Colorado and Oregon, as well as two local High Sierra Select teams made of up Reno/Tahoe-area high school players.
The high school-age version of the Adrenaline Tropics, which featured Division I college prospects, won the tournament.
Wegener said the proceeds from both weekends of the tournament are channeled back in to the HSL Foundation.
“In fact, since its inception, we’ve given more than $100,000 to area teams for fields, goals, coaches, officials, equipment, uniforms … really every facet of the game,” he said.
