Players will soon be able to tee off for a full slate of summer golf with all of the area’s courses scheduled to be open by June 2.

Because of last winter’s heavy snowfall, many of the courses around Truckee have experienced a delayed start to the season compared to recent years, but as the snow continues to melt, players have begun trickling onto courses around the area.

At this point in the season, a few local courses are up and running, while others await for snow and runoff to dissipate.

Truckee’s Ponderosa Golf Course has been playable for a few weeks now. The 3,022-yard course features nine holes for a par of 35 from the longest tees.

Nine-hole rates range from $23 to $32 for adults depending on the day and time. Youth golfers can get on the course from between $15 and $26.

The Tahoe Mountain Club has one of their two course, Old Greenwood Golf Club, open for players with the other, The Golf Club at Grey’s Crossing, scheduled to open on June 2.

After a delayed start to the season, Old Greenwood Golf Club’s 18 holes opened to players on May 19. According to Director of Golf Operations Travis Alley, the course usually opens in the middle of May, and has opened in the first week of May during the last three seasons.

The course features 18 holes designed by Jack Nicklaus and plays 7,518 yards from the longest tees for a par-72.

The Tahoe Mountain Club’s other course, The Golf Club at Grey’s Crossing, sits nestled among trees with much of the course shaded during daylight hours. The lack of direct sunlight has pushed opening day to June 2, as the course dries out from winter.

“Everyone’s relieved to be looking at green grass,” Alley said. “It’s cleared of snow, and it’s going to be really good shape for June 2.”

The 18-hole course, designed by Peter Jacobsen, plays 7,466 yards at its longest for a par of 72.

Rates for both courses range from $75 to $150 through June 15, depending on the time of day. The price will then jump to $200 during peak hours of the summer season.

The heavy winter has also pushed back the opening day at Coyote Moon Golf Course. The course sits at a higher elevation than most local courses, which has pushed back their usual mid-May opening week.

According to General Manager Ed McGargill, the course still has snow covering some areas, but should be ready for golfers to tee off on June 2.

Coyote Moon features 18 holes and plays 7,1777 yards at its longest for a par of 72.

Once open, Coyote Moon will cost players $115 to $175 depending on time of day.

Also opening on June 2 will be Tahoe Donner Golf Course.

Golf Operations Manager James Murtagh said the course usually shoots for a Memorial Day weekend opening, but because of meltwater runoff, the course was forced to push back their opening until the beginning of June.

Tahoe Donner is an 18-hole, par-72 course and is 7,002 yards long. The course costs $55 to $100 for non-members until June 8. Prices then jump up to $69-$125 depending on time of day.

The Links at Squaw Creek is also set to open on Friday, June 2.

The par-71 links course is at the base of Squaw Valley sits at an elevation of 6,200 feet and measures 6,931 yards from the gold tees.

Golfers can take advantage of a promotional deal once the season starts with limited holes and a cart for $40.

The Course at Northstar opened for Memorial Day weekend with the season’s first golfers teeing off on Friday, May 26.

According to the Northstar’s clubhouse, players still have to keep the carts on the cart path, and the driving range will stay closed closed until Friday, June 2.

Mid-week golfers can take advantage of special rates during Northstar’s Customer Appreciation Days on June 11-13 and on June 18-20. During that time, players can get on the course for $50.

Women will have the opportunity to work on their games with weekly golf clinics being offered for $25. The clinics begin at noon and 1:30 p.m. on Monday, June 19. Visit northstarcalifornia.com/golf/golf-lessons.aspx for more information.

New this year, Northstar will help players fine tune their approach on the course’s 18 holes with the introduction of a GPS system for each golf cart.

The 6,781-yard, par-72 golf course costs $45 to $95 for 18 holes depending on the date and time.
