The road to fame and fortune starts at Squaw Valley USA
Squaw Valley USA hosts The Paul Mitchell X-Qualifier Jan. 16 and 17 and the Red Bull Ultracross Jan. 19 and 20.
The Paul Mitchell X-Qualifier
The only official qualifying competition for the 2001 ESPN Winter X-Games, the X-Games qualfier features the best men and women skiercross competitors and big air huckers in the world vying for an invitation to compete at the 2001 X-Games, the largest winter alternative sports competition. This event showcases much of today’s younger talent, those that have not had the opportunity to participate in the larger events and make their mark.
The international roster of competitors includes names like J. P. Auclair, Logen Towsey, Tanner Hall, Steele Spence, Chris Davenport and Kaj Zackrisson. The skiercross is open to both men and women and the big air competition is open to men only. The qualifier will be nationally televised on ESPN and ESPN 2.
Red Bull Ultra Cross
The second event on the calendar is the Red Bull Ultra Cross Jan. 19 and 20. Also open to the public, this event features one skier and one snowboarder per team in a relay format event (teams must register together). As in skiercross or boardercross, four snowboarders start simultaneously and race on a moto-style course, featuring bank turns, large rollers and tabletop jumps. As the snowboarders cross the finish line, the electronic timing opens the start gate for that team’s skier. Winners are determined when the skiers cross the finish. The total cash purse for the event is $30,000 and the event will air on USA Network’s Core Culture program.
Athletes scheduled to compete in this year’s event include 1998 World free-skiing champion Shane McConkey, 1998 Olympic snowboarder Adam Hostetter and 2000 boarder-cross champion at Winter X Games Drew Neilson. Also expected to return to the scene are last year’s winners Shaun Palmer, Chris Hernandez, Brittney Mahanna, Charlotte Moats and Megan Brown.
