Thelen leads TTHS to victory

JAMES BALL, Sierra Sun

It was a good day for Tahoe-Truckee High School alpine skier Wes Thelen on March 3 – he took home first place in the individual state championship.

In fact, it was a good day for the boys’ team in general. Thelen’s first-place and Mike Thomas’ fourth-place in GS and slalom were enough to seal the overall win for TTHS in the boys’ division.

Facing off in an elimination ladder, the top eight racers from both the girls’ and the boys’ teams, skiers went head to head after a qualifying run at last week’s championship at Alpine Meadows.

From that field, the top 16 boys and 16 girls from the entire field advanced.

The Truckee girls ended up in third overall, giving Truckee a second-place team finish, just one point behind North Tahoe.

“The boys came through for the team this year,” said coach Pat Mooney. “When our kids got to the finish line, they did really well.”

As for next year, Mooney said he expects another good team.

“Next year is looking real good. We have a lot of kids like Quincy Young, Stacey Cook, Emily Sterling, Gary Cook, Bryan Richmond, Mike Thomas who will score some big points next year. There are others, as well.”

He also said the team’s strength has been its depth.
