Three is the magic number for golf team

Lara Mullin, Sierra Sun

Wolverine golf Coach Jeff Froelich and his team are seeing triple this week. After pulling out a third place finish at Rosewood (Manogue) on Friday, Truckee secured a third place seat in league standings.

Last weekend’s match was the third showing of the season for TTHS, leaving three remaining invitationals to play before commencing post-season play. See the pattern forming here?

Perhaps more importantly, the number three represents the highest three Wolverine scores that consistently bar Froelich’s swingers from winning the day.

“If we want to compete for team first place honors, we are going to have to bring down our fourth, fifth and sixth golfers’ scores,” said Froelich.

Strong play by Mark Lunbeck with a team low of 75 strokes at Rosewood, and a 78 by Jason Waters kept the Wolverines on the leader board on Saturday with Lowry and Manogue. Lunbeck’s 75 was his strongest performance to date, tying for the lowest round of the day with North Tahoe’s Linkey and Lowry’s Bryson.

TNT’s third-lowest score was delivered by Jarrett Bower, who shot a disappointing 87, after his season low 78 two weeks ago at Yerington.

These three scores could have easily propelled Truckee to the head of the pack of nine teams, yet two scores over 90 and one 89 were enough to inflate the Wolverines’ day average, landing them behind second place Lowry and the winning Miners.

The team’s next meet is tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Fernley.
