TNT Explosion dance teams headed to Vegas
Special to the Sun
The Psyche senior dance team, an 18-and-younger competitive squad that trains out of the TNT Explosion All Star Gym in Truckee, has qualified for three dance nationals this season.
The senior team qualified at the UCA/UDA Bay Area Championship in October by taking first place out of four teams in the Senior Hip-Hop division. The UDA Dance Nationals will be held at Walt Disney World, Fla., in February.
The senior squad placed fourth out of seven teams at the America’s Best competition at the Sacramento Convention Center in November to qualify for the America’s Best Dance Nationals in Fort Worth, Texas, from March 9-11.
The team also competed in the JAMZ Northern California Xtreme Championship at the Cow Palace in Daly City on Dec. 2, where it competed against six other teams consisting of 10 or more dancers. The Psyche senior team of only seven dancers representing Truckee, Reno and Incline Village placed first to take the title of Senior Hip-Hop Nor-Cal Xtreme Champions and qualify for the JAMZ Cheer and Dance Nationals in Las Vegas in March.
The adult team ” an 18-and-older group that trains out of the TNT Explosion All Star Gym ” also competed for the first time this season at the Nor-Cal Xtreme, where they took fifth place in the Open Hip-Hop Division. Along with the Psyche seniors, the adult team qualified to compete in the JAMZ Cheer and Dance Nationals in Las Vegas.
Because it cannot compete in all three dance nationals for which it qualified, the Psyche senior team decided that it will travel to Las Vegas for JAMZ Cheer and Dance Nationals in March. The adult team will be competing at the JAMZ Nationals, too.
The next competition for both the senior and adult dance teams is the UC Davis JAMZ Davis Xtreme on Jan. 14. The senior team will be competing at the San Mateo Convention Center in the Athletic Championship Open Nationals on Jan. 20-21, as well as its first dance studio competition, “Spotlight Company,” in Sacramento in February.
Starting in January, the TNT Explosion All Star gym will be forming elementary (kindergarten through fifth grade) and junior (sixth grade through ninth) hip-hop teams to be ready to compete for fun at the end of February.
There will also be an audition for the senior and adult teams for intermediate to advanced hip-hop dancers by appointment only in January. The teams will be preparing for JAMZ Cheer and Dance Nationals in Las Vegas through March. The dancers who are invited to the teams will only compete when they can dance on the same level as the core competition group.
The TNT Explosion All Star Gym offers many tumbling classes, recreational cheer, elite competitive cheer team and dance technique in ballet, jazz, tap and hip-hop. In January, the gym will be offering early-afternoon, pre-tumbling classes and dance classes for ages 1-4. For more information call 587-8326.
