Truckee alpine skiers speedy in Nevada State Championship

The Truckee High alpine ski team competed for the first time in the Nevada State High School Championships at Mount Rose Ski Resort last Saturday and Sunday.

The top two boys and girls teams from the Tahoe Basin League as well as four teams from Nevada (Carson, Galena, McQueen and Reno) competed in slalom on Saturday and giant slalom on Sunday.

Galena won the overall boys competition for both days by a five-point margin (707-702) over the Truckee boys. The Truckee girls placed third overall behind North Tahoe and Reno (764-724-665).

The Truckee boys placed second in the slalom competition on Saturday, six points behind Galena (349-343), with a third-place finish by Scott Horn, an 11th-place result from Max Salinger and 22nd from Michael Kruck.

On Sunday the boys won the giant slalom race, beating Galena by one point (359-358). Truckee captain Josh Benge won the Giant Slalom Individual State Champion title by almost a second. Horn placed fourth, Salinger 17th and Kruck 23rd.

The Truckee girls placed fourth in Saturday’s slalom competition behind North Tahoe, Reno, and Galena (384-358-335-327). Michelle Delumyea placed third, Paola Teran 13th and Whitney Lewis 14th.

On Sunday the Truckee girls finished third in the giant slalom behind North Tahoe and Reno (380-366-338). Delumyea came in sixth, Shannon Horn 13th and Teran 22nd.
