Truckee baseball drops Game 1 at state

LAS VEGAS, Nev. ” Truckee lost 4-1 to top Southern seed Virgin Valley in its opening game of the 3A state championship tournament Thursday.

The Wolverines, seeded second from the North, will play top Northern seed Spring Creek today at noon in the double-elimination tournament.

The winner of that game will play the loser between Virgin Valley and Faith Lutheran at 6 p.m. for a chance to compete for the state title Saturday.

Faith Lutheran, the South’s No. 2 seed, routed Spring Creek 9-0 on Thursday.

According to the Las Vegas Review Journal, Virgin Valley starter Travis Leavitt pitched a three-hitter with 13 strikeouts to limit Truckee’s offense.

The Wolverines scored their one run in the bottom of the fifth on a single, a hit batter and a double, according to an article posted to The Spectrum website. The article says another Truckee runner was gunned down at home trying to score on the double, but it does not include the names of Truckee players.

Based on the Wolverines’ rotation of pitchers, senior Justin Vosburgh presumably started for the Wolverines, although coach Mike Ellis was not available for comment Friday morning.
