Truckee baseball splits with Dayton
Staff reports
The Wolverines were able to take advantage of some costly Dayton mistakes in a 9-7 game one victory on April 3. Truckee overcame a 7-2 deficit in a seven-run sixth inning that featured two walks, two hit batsmen and two errors by Dayton’s defense.
Truckee pitcher J.R. Murphy improved his record to 4-1, pitching a complete game and striking out 12 hitters. Dayton’s Matt Bowman touched Murphy for two homers and five RBIs, but Murphy held Dayton scoreless in the final three innings for the Northern 3A league victory.
Nik Smith had a homer for Truckee Ð the third straight game in which Truckee has had at least one long ball Ð and two RBIs. Murphy had a double and a RBI as Truckee picked up its 11th win of 2004.
Game two looked to be identical as Dayton jumped out to a 5-0 lead, only to see another big sixth inning from Truckee. But Truckee could muster only four, and Bowman made it stand up by shutting the Wolverines down in the seventh for the save. Bowman had two more RBIs in game two. Kyle Adams had a two-run double for Truckee, and Smith and Jimmy Williams had a RBI apiece. Williams (2-2) took the loss on the mound.
Truckee took an 11-3, 3-2 record into its matchup at home with Bishop Manogue on Tuesday afternoon. Manogue has won 91 straight games in the Northern 3A. Truckee hosts Fernley in a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 10 a.m.
