The Truckee baseball team dropped the first contest of its three-game season series against Sparks on Wednesday, 5-2, in Sparks.

The Wolverines (11-14) were held in check by senior starter Kieffer Putman, who kept the visitors off-balance while scattering eight hits and five walks over seven innings — while throwing 141 pitches.

Truckee (13-6) managed two runs in the third inning to pull to within a run, at 3-2, but the Railroaders added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth to secure the win.

Senior Andy McKechnie started for the Wolverines and allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits and five walks in four innings. Chris Towle pitched two scoreless innings in relief, giving up two hits and a walk.

After falling behind 3-0 in the first inning, McKechnie doubled to open the third. Consecutive walks then set up Erik Holmer with a bases-loaded situation, and Holmer came through with a two-run single.

McKechnie had two doubles in the game, while Jackson Rohlf had two hits, and Towle, Travis Ferre, Aaron Pado and Holmer each contributed one hit.

The Railroaders scored their five runs on only seven hits, with Putman leading the way with a 3-for-4 performance with two runs scored. Collin Ray and Dustin Alexander delivered two RBIs apiece.
