The Truckee baseball team went 1-2 in a crossover tournament against the Ruby Mountain League over the weekend, beating Spring Creek 5-4 on Friday before falling to Elko, 10-9, and Lowry, 10-5, on Saturday.

Against Spring Creek, Truckee (6-8) scored a run in each of the first three innings to jump out to an early 3-1 lead. The Spartans tied the score with two runs in the fourth inning, then took the lead with a run in the top of the seventh. The Wolverines tied the score again with a run in the bottom of the seventh and won it in the eighth.

Senior Erik Holmer started for Truckee and threw seven innings, allowing four runs on 10 hits, while junior left-hander Ty Vaio earned the win by pitching a scoreless eighth.

The Wolverines managed six hits off of Spring Creek starter McCade Wing and reliever Blake Pruitt, led by Chris Towle’s 2-for-4 day. Andy McKechnie drove in three runs and Riley Guiragossian drove in two.

Truckee played another extra-inning game against Elko the following day, but with different results.

The defending state champs scored three run in the first inning and two more in the second to carry a 5-1 lead into the third inning. But Elko battled back, scoring once in the fourth and twice in the sixth before exploding for five runs in the top of the seventh.

Down 9-5 in the bottom of the seventh, the last half of Truckee’s order came through with four runs to send the game into extra innings knotted at 9-9. Elko pushed across a run in the top of the eighth, however, and Truckee could not match it.

Thor Retzlaff reached on a dropped third strike to begin the seventh-inning rally. Bradley VanSchoonhoven then hit a come-backer to the pitcher, who turned to complete the double play but instead threw it into center field. Teagan Pado singled in Retzlaff and Vaio singled in VanSchoonhoven, while Pado and Vaio both scored on wild pitches to tie the score. With one out and the top of the order up, Truckee could not get across another run.

The Wolverines knocked around starter Joe Bejarano, scoring five runs in two innings on eight hits, including a two-run home run by Towle. Senior Cody Kerns relieved Bejarano in the third and proceeded to shut down the Truckee lineup through the sixth inning. Kerns finished with eight strikeouts in six innings and gave up three hits and one earned run (four runs total).

Guiragossian started for Truckee and pitched six innings, allowing four runs on eight hits. Vaio, Towle and Travis Ferre threw in relief.

Towle had three hits and two RBIs, Retzlaff had three hits and an RBI, and Teagan Pado had two hits and an RBI. Vaio, VanSchoonhoven, McKechnie, Gavin Broad, Aaron Pado and Jackson Rohlf each contributed one hit.

Against Lowry, Truckee took a 3-0 lead in the first inning and led most of the way. But the Buckaroos rallied with a four-run sixth and three-run seventh to earn the win.

Truckee had nine hits, led by McKechnie’s 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Rohlf had two doubles and an RBI, and Towle, VanSchoonhoven, Aaron Pado, Teagan Pado and Retzlaff each had one hit.

Truckee is scheduled to compete in the Big League Dreams Tournament in Redding from Wednesday through Friday. The Wolverines then host a Mount Rose League doubleheader against North Tahoe on Saturday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
