Truckee baseball: Wolverines split at Fernley, take season series

FERNLEY ” The Wolverines split a league doubleheader at Fernley on Saturday, winning the first game 9-5 and losing the second 7-6.

Truckee, which took two of three from the Vaqueros in the season series, improved to 12-3 in the Northern 3A (16-10 overall) while Fernley fell to 7-5 (9-11 overall).

Senior Justin Vosburgh, who was on a 60-pitch count, said Truckee coach Mike Ellis, started and allowed three earned runs in four innings to earn the win. Junior left-hander Ryan Zusy gave up one run in three innings of relief.

Mike Fagan led Truckee offensively, going 2 for 4 with an RBI and three stolen bases. Vosburgh drove in two runs and swiped two bases and Jordan Deiro went 2 for 4 with an RBI and two stolen bases.

Senior Scott Mathot pitched into the sixth inning of Game 2 before he was relieved by Zusy and then Maclane Brady.

The Wolverines managed just four hits in the game and only one against Fernley ace Josh Cutts, who pitched the first five innings before a trio of pitchers barely held off a late-charging Truckee offense that scored five runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh ” only to come up a run short.

Truckee and Fernley rank second and third, respectively, in the Northern 3A standings, while Spring Creek leads the league at 11-1.

The Wolverines wrap up league play against Yerington (2-10) this week and are guaranteed a playoff berth. Truckee will likely host the first round May 15-16.
