TRUCKEE — The Truckee baseball team picked up a quality win against second-place Spring Creek on Saturday but dropped the other two games of the Northern Division I-A series.
After losing Friday’s opener, 12-2, the Wolverines handed the Spartans their third loss in league play, 4-3, in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader. The Spartans took the series with a 15-3 win in the final game.
Truckee pitchers Connor Bullion and JJ Bellon limited Spring Creek to the three runs on seven hits in the first game Saturday.
After the visitors opened with a run in the first inning and two more in the second, Truckee answered with four in the bottom of the second to take over the lead. Neither team scored again.
Bullion was sharp on the mound, holding the Spartans scoreless in five innings of work. He recorded three strikeouts while allowing four hits and a walk. Bellon, who issued six walks, gave up one earned run on two hits.
The Wolverines tagged Spring Creek starter John Lydon with the loss with their four-run fourth. Lydon went on to finish the game, however, limiting Truckee to six hits total.
Junior Jack Englert powered the Truckee offense with a double and two RBIs. Jayden Commendatore and Miles Guiragossian both had a hit and an RBI, and Bullion, Bradley VanSchoonhoven and Will Beldon each had a hit.
VanSchoonhoven started and took the loss on Friday. Four of the eight runs he allowed were earned, which was the result of five walks, eight hits and four Truckee errors in the game. Colin Just pitched the final two innings, giving up two runs on three hits.
Junior Matt Millis threw a complete game for the Spartans, striking out eight and surrendering two runs on four hits. With the win he improved to 6-0 on the year with a 1.56 ERA.
Beldon and Mike Jones drove in a run apiece, while Alec Vaio had two hits and Commendatore had one.
Saturday’s series finale got away from the Wolverines early, as Spring Creek scored four runs in the first inning and three more in the second to take a 7-2 lead. The Spartans tacked on eight runs in the fifth to complete the rout.
Sophomore starter Gary Grosjean took the loss. In four innings, he was charged with eight earned runs on five hits and five walks. Vaio and Just pitched in relief.
Spring Creek senior Kody Kirby pitched all five innings and held Truckee to just three runs on three hits as the game was called early on the mercy rule. Commendatore drove in a run on one hit, and VanSchoonhoven and Vaio each had one hit.
Spring Creek, which improved to 13-3 in the Northern Division I-A, trails only Elko (15-1) in the league standings. Truckee is 3-10 in league.
The Wolverines are scheduled to play a three-game league series at first-place Elko this Friday and Saturday.
