The Wolverines are scheduled to host South Tahoe on Friday, girls at 6 p.m. and boys at 7:30. Truckee hosted Sparks on Tuesday, but the games ended too late for publication.

The Truckee boys basketball team picked up its first league win in quality fashion Saturday.

After getting worked over in the second quarter and falling behind 34-21 by the half against visiting Fernley, the Wolverines turned the tide in the third quarter, outscoring the Vaqueros 23-3 to take over the lead for good.

Truckee held on for the 62-56 win.

“It came down to defensive effort and poise at the end,” said Truckee coach Sky Nelson, whose Wolverines improved to 1-7 in the Division I-A and 3-10 overall. “We’ve been close, but we haven’t been able to get over the hump.”

A change was in order after Fernley (2-6 league, 7-8 overall) outscored Truckee 24-7 in the second quarter.

“The second quarter they took us to the cleaners,” Nelson said. “We were playing too compact, and their shooters were putting ‘em in. At the half we switched to what I call the ‘mushy mush’ — we played a full-court man press and kept them in front of us the rest of the game. And the guys just took it to ‘em.”

Nelson said his seniors — Louden Smith, Sean Daniel and Ian Wilson — had particularly strong games, as well as juniors Teagan Pado and Nick Oberriter. Nelson put Pado on Fernley’s top scorer, and he stuck to him like glue: “He stayed on the guy’s number and did a great job.”

After taking control with their big third quarter, the Wolverines spread the floor on offense and took advantage of their bonus situation by converting at the free-throw line.

“They did a very nice job of closing out the game,” Nelson said of his players.

Dominic Ceresola led Fernley with 25 points. Truckee stats were not available.

Girls cruise

Truckee’s girls set the tone with a 50-43 win.

They controlled the action from the start, building a 14-6 lead after one quarter and 23-13 by the half. Truckee led 39-20 after three quarters.

Senior guard Kaylee “Ned” Neill led the way with 21 points, while sophomore point Sydney Mock added 15. Emily Houghton and Anais Fay contributed four points apiece.

Truckee improved to 4-4 in league while Fernley fell to 1-7.
