TRUCKEE, Calif. – First-year Truckee girls’ basketball coaches Scott Conn and Marc Kopp resigned from their positions this past week due to “confidential” reasons, Truckee Principal David Putney confirmed.

The principal would not discuss any details about the resignations, citing personnel issues.

“To be real honest, that tends to be a confidential personnel issue,” Putney said Thursday. “I think it’s best just to say we decided to take the team in a different direction …

“I’ve met with the parents, and they are informed and supportive. And we’re just supporting the girls right now and hoping for a good season.”

Conn had coached at North Tahoe the past four years before taking over the Truckee girls’ program this season. He replaced Angelo Tenorio as head varsity coach, while Kopp served as his varsity assistant and head coach of the JV team.

Caroline Bechdolt, the head freshmen girls’ coach the past two years, replaces Conn as the new varsity coach. Tenorio, ironically, takes over the JV girls’ team in addition to his job as varsity boys’ coach.

As one of the candidates for the varsity girls’ coaching position last spring, Bechdolt said she’s excited to inherit the position.

“It’s going to be a challenge, but I’m super excited about it. I’ve worked with these girls since they were freshmen, so I’ve built a pretty good rapport with them, and they have with me. And I think we have a mutual respect for each other,” she said.

After learning of Putney’s confidentiality policy regarding the matter, Conn gave the following statement in a Thursday phone interview: “Marc Kopp and I resigned for personal reasons. We wish the girls and all three teams at Truckee the best of luck this season.”

Rick Buhler, who took over the North Tahoe girls’ program for Conn, said he’s sad to see Conn and Kopp go, as he felt they were both quality coaches who were committed to teaching young players the game of basketball.

“The league is losing two of its most respected, professional and committed coaches with the loss of Scott Conn and Marc Kopp at Truckee,” Buhler said. “It will be a disappointment not to face them in league play.”
