Truckee is scheduled to host league games against South Tahoe on Tuesday, with the girls starting at 6 p.m. and the boys following at 7:30. The Wolverines are scheduled to travel to Lowry on Friday and Fernley next Tuesday, Jan. 12.

The Truckee girls basketball team went 1-3 in the Elite Varsity Tournament at McQueen last week, picking up a win against Yerington, 45-36, and losing to McQueen, 60-28, Damonte Ranch, 57-27, and Fernley, 41-35.

Eight different Wolverines scored in their win over the Lions. Senior point guard Sydney Mock led the way with 19 points, while Maddie Monson scored six points, Marlena Montano and Shelby Brooks scored four apiece, and Elizabeth Morgan and Adela Ortiz each had three.

The game remained close throughout, with Truckee leading 11-5 after one quarter, 17-11 at the half and 29-24 after three quarters. The Wolverines outscored the Lions 16-12 in the fourth to pull away.

Division I McQueen limited Truckee to single-digit scoring in each quarter as the hosts jumped out to a 21-9 lead by the end of the first quarter and 37-16 by the half.

Senior forward Sadaria Mcalister led the Lancers with 25 points on 12-of-16 from the floor. Mock scored eight to lead the Wolverines, while Morgan and Montano scored four apiece, and Ortiz and Karina Nunez each scored three.

Damonte Ranch, another Division I school, held the Wolverines to seven points in the first half and 14 points through three quarters. Mock scored a team-high 14 points, Brooks added four and Izzy Abarno three.

Against the only Division I-A league opponent they faced in the tournament, Fernley, the Wolverines got off to a promising start but fell behind after a poor second quarter. Truckee led 12-5 after one quarter but was outscored 16-2 in the second. Truckee outscored Fernley 15-10 in the fourth, but it was not enough to overcome the 31-20 deficit Fernley built by the end of three periods.

Mock scored a team-high 10 points, Abarno scored nine and Monson had six. Grace DeLeon led the Vaqueros with 14 points.

Boys drop league contest

Truckee’s boys suffered a 63-43 loss to visiting Sparks on Saturday to fall to 0-3 in league play.

The Wolverines fell behind 20-11 in the first quarter and were never able to recover as the Railroaders built their lead to 34-24 by the half and 48-34 by the start of the fourth quarter.

Sophomore guard Gabe Cruz scored a team-high 11 points for the Wolverines, Airon Yarbrough added nine points, Jenner Tresan had eight and Ben Miller seven. Sparks junior Matthew Longland led all scorers with 26 points, Danny Lopez contributed 15 points and John Anguiano had 10.
