Locking up one of the Northern Division I-A’s best shooters isn’t easy.

Fortunately for the Fallon girls, they were able to do just that as the Greenwave rolled to a 54-35 win over Truckee on Friday.

Fallon held junior Truckee guard Sydney Mock to 12 points and limited her ability to create shots and get her teammates involved. In addition, the Wave also shut down Marcelle Reynaud as the Wolverines guard was held to four points.

“She (Mock) is a gamer,” Fallon coach Anne Smith said. “They did hold her, but she had to work for those 12.”

Fallon, meanwhile, was led by the post presence of Megan McCormick, who tallied 12 points, and Kayla Buckmaster, who added 10.

On the perimeter, Fallon guard Ali Tedford chipped in with nine points as the Wave improved to 2-1 in league and 5-6 overall.

“The young girls are just panicking when they shouldn’t be,” said Truckee coach David Shalvis, whose Wolverines fell to 0-3 in league and 2-6 overall. “Turnovers are killing us … and they’re better than that.”

Fallon opened the game on a 9-0 run before Truckee’s Shelby Brooks scored to get the Wolverines on the board.

Madison Perazzo and Shelby Smith combined for the next five points for Fallon, but 3-pointers by Mock and Adela Ortiz cut the lead to 16-8 after the first period.

Fallon continued its solid play in the second quarter, highlighted by a beautiful one-touch pass from Maggie O’Flaherty to Tedford for an easy layup. O’Flaherty added a jumper to push the lead to 22-10.

Truckee struggled to break the Wave’s full-court press and set up its half-court offense. Reynaud and Taylor Stevens added baskets for the Wolverines, but Fallon ended the half on a 5-0 run for a 29-14 halftime lead.

“I feel really good about our offensive transition play,” Smith said. “Guards are hitting the post real well.”

Truckee’s offense picked up the pace in the third quarter, but Fallon still outscored the Wolverines 13-10 in the period. The Wave again opened the quarter with a run, this one 5-0, before Ortiz and Mock recorded consecutive baskets.

But Fallon’s defense was too much to overcome. The Wave harassed Mock all game and used their speed to rotate and contest shots.

It was more of the same in the fourth quarter as Buckmaster scored eight points to lead Fallon.

“There was a lid on the basket,” Shalvis said. “It’s tough. We don’t have the big rebounding presence and I’m waiting for someone to step up.”

Truckee also lost to Lowry, 42-22, at home on Saturday. Mock scored 10 points and Karina Nunez had six.

The Wolverines travel to Spring Creek on Friday and Elko on Saturday for a pair of league games.
