The Truckee girls took care of business with a 49-28 rout in a Mount Rose League basketball game at Sparks on Saturday – their fourth straight win to begin league play.

The Wolverines countered the Railroaders’ outside shooting attack, which included five 3-pointers, with their own 3-point barrage led by Ashley Harris and Kaylee Neill, both of whom hit three shots from behind the arc.

After leading by only three points at the end of the first quarter, at 11-8, Truckee took control with a 14-3 run to start the second quarter, according to the Daily Sparks Tribune. By half, the Wolverines led 28-18.

Senior Sydnie English scored a game-high 17 points, while Truckee received balanced contributions from Neill, Harris, Kate Traeger, Olivia Duner, Cassandra Sawyer and Katey Hamill. Although the senior guard duo of Duner and Hamill did not score much, their defense and overall floor play created havoc for Sparks, resulting in many scoring opportunities for the rest of the team, said Truckee coach Geoff Stephens.

“Sparks played with a lot of heart but we are playing as well as we have all year,” Stephens said. “The girls are now starting to play instinctively rather than sequential. Sometimes we don’t even run set plays. The girls now are figuring out the ball, back and off screens with rolls and backdoors.

“They are now just playing basketball. It is very rewarding and now fun to watch. Hopefully we’ll take it to the next level and do it for four quarters and game after game.”

Truckee improved to 11-7 overall and 4-0 in Mount Rose League play while Sparks fell to 1-10 overall and 1-6 in league.

Truckee’s boys did not fare as well, as they fell behind early – 10-0 in the opening minutes and 20-8 by the end of the first quarter – on their way to a 64-45 loss.

The Wolverines managed to outscore the hosts 30-29 in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the large deficit.

Senior forward Adam Morgan scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Truckee, while Ian Wilson came off the bench to score eight points and grab five rebounds. D.J. Devine finished with a game-high 21 points and 16 rebounds for the Railroaders.

Truckee dropped to 9-8 overall and 2-2 in Mount Rose League play, and Sparks improved to 10-8 overall and 4-2 in league.

UP NEXT: Truckee is scheduled to host South Tahoe on Tuesday, girls at 6 p.m. and boys at 7:30. The Wolverines play at Incline on Friday and at Whittell next Tuesday.
