DAYTON, Nev. – The Truckee girls basketball team managed to pull off a 30-22 win in a sloppy Division I-A crossover game at Dayton on Wednesday.

Truckee head coach Geoff Stephens said it appeared as if the game was played on a sheet of ice, as both teams had trouble not traveling or moving without the ball.

“Both teams looked like they were running in mud. Add to the mix that our girls were mentally still on vacation, it was hard to get the girls going,” Stephens said. “After scoring 70 points in our last game, I thought we had our offense clicking. Basketball can be a very humbling game.”

After allowing eight points in the first 4-minutes 34-seconds, the Wolverines gave up only 14 in the final 27 1/2 minutes en route to the win.

Both Stephens and Dayton coach Cliff Serawop credited Truckee’s full-court press led by senior guards Olivia Duner and Katey Hamill, which they picked up in the third quarter after entering the half tied at 14.

“That’s the first time we’ve had trouble not scoring,” said Serawop, whose team dropped to 0-9. “At the beginning of the year we were at least in the high 20s. We’ve been getting into the 40s.

“The big game changer was their press. We had a lot of problems handling it tonight. We kind of panicked; took quick shots.”

Although the Wolverines created 18 turnovers, they struggled to convert on the offensive end. They shot just 1-for-20 from the perimeter.

The offensive woes were even worse for Dayton, as the hosts went more than five minutes in the third quarter without a point. Duner and Jackie Bolton scored a bucket apiece at the start of the half to make it 18-14. Dayton’s Ashley Sandy and Cheyenne Strong scored to tie the game at 18 with 2:49 left in the third.

Dayton went scoreless the remainder of the period, going 0-for-5 from the field and turning the ball over four times in that span. Duner’s two baskets sparked a 6-0 quarter-ending run by the Wolverines.

A basket by Strong closed the gap to 26-22 with 4:51 left in the game, but that was the extent of Dayton’s offense.

Sydnie English posted a game-high 12 points for the Wolverines, while Duner scored eight and Bolton had six points and four blocked shots. Karina Nunez and Lauren Peak provided solid defensive contributions, Stephens said.

Truckee improved to 7-4 overall and 3-1 against the Division I-A.

UP NEXT: Truckee plays at Elko on Friday and Spring Creek on Saturday. The Wolverines host Incline on Thursday, Jan. 10.
