TRUCKEE — The best defense the Railroaders could muster was simply not enough to contain Kaylee Neill.

The Truckee senior guard torched visiting Sparks on Tuesday night, knifing through traffic and draining shots from range en route to a season-high 28 points, which helped lead the Wolverines to a 57-34 win.

Neill, who’s averaging better than 12 points a game, has been on fire of late, as she dropped 21 in a win over Fernley on Saturday. She hit three 3-pointers on Tuesday.

Her Wolverines are just as hot. Their most recent win marked their third straight victory in Division I-A play, improving their league record to 5-4.

Sparks (1-8 league) didn’t make it easy in the teams’ second meeting of the season.

Despite Neill’s offensive performance, the Railroaders played tough defense throughout, taking numerous charges and preventing the Wolverines from scoring easy points in the paint.

Truckee led by only one point late in the second quarter before ending the half with a 7-0 run. Emily Houghton hit a 3-pointer, Neill made two free throws and Cassandra Sawyer scored in the post to give the Wolverines a 26-18 lead at the break.

Sophomore point guard Sydney Mock scored inside to open the second half. Neill followed with a steal and took it coast-to-coast, and the Wolverines were off and rolling with a 30-18 lead. By the end of the third quarter they had stretched it to 37-22.

Sophomore Anais Fay had a strong game in the post and finished with eight points, while Sawyer contributed six points, Mock had five and Marcelle Reynaud four. Roxana Guardron led Sparks with 11 points.
