Truckee boys inch closer to playoff elimination

Truckee’s boys basketball team continued its roller coaster season by dropping a crucial Northern 3A contest 50-48 at Fernley on Saturday.

The Wolverines had their share of chances to win the ballgame, said head coach Keith Crawford ” namely in the waning seconds of the fourth quarter when Truckee missed an open layup that would have tied the score.

“The game shouldn’t have come down to that,” Crawford said of the final shot, adding that the Wolverines were beaten at the free throw line as well as on the boards.

“It’s frustrating. It was a big emotional letdown. I still think we’re better than that team. We just let that one slip away.”

Truckee and Incline now share 6-8 records and trail Dayton (14-0), Yerington (9-5), Lowry (9-5), Spring Creek (9-5) and Fernley.

The Highlanders own the tiebreaker over the Wolverines, and each team has two remaining games ” Incline hosts Spring Creek and Lowry next weekend and Truckee hosts Dayton on Wednesday before closing the season at Yerington on Friday.

Senior Drew Stewart led the Wolverines in scoring Saturday with 20 points, while senior Cory Hoehn scored 14 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.
