The Truckee High boys soccer team capped the 2005 season with a 2-0 victory over Pahrump Valley to capture the Nevada 3A state title.

“We went into the game with a lot of confidence knowing that if we played to our potential good things would happen,” Truckee head coach Hernan Valdivia said. “We finished the season with our best team effort. Everyone was fired up and ready to play from the opening whistle to the last.”

The win gave the Wolverines their first state title since 2001, after finishing the regular season with an 18-4 overall record, and 6-2 in league.

“We had a good season with some ups and downs, but never gave up and continued to work hard,” senior team captain Erik Newland said.

In the championship game, Truckee earned its first goal 12 minutes into the second half when senior Eric Dita blasted a 25-yard bomb into the upper corner of the goal, just past the outstretched glove of the Trojan’s goalkeeper.

Fifteen minutes later Newland added a second goal when he received a pass near the top of the box, beat one defender and slotted a right-footed shot into the far side of the net. With a 2-0 lead, Truckee’s defense, led by senior captain Kevin Flynn, Emmanuel Sarabia, Josh Benge and goalkeeper Ryan Newland, shut down the Trojan attack by allowing zero shots on goal during the second half.

Senior captain Scott Eberhardt and Al Virrey led the Wolverine offense and created several scoring opportunities. Travis Ganong, Austin Lynch, Scott Kelly and Joey Eberhardt all played well in the midfield, despite losing starter Jeremy Adams to a knee injury in the opening minutes of the game.

“It was good for the team to come together when we really needed it most,” Scott Eberhardt said.

And after a long, hard-fought season, the Wolverines attained what they set out to do.

“From day one, our main goal has been to win the state title,” Valdivia said.

Before the game the team was also presented an Academic State Championship award that goes to the team with the highest overall grade point average in Nevada.
