It was the kind of intense give-and-take match that spawns a soccer rivalry.

For 60 minutes, South Tahoe and Truckee high schools fought to a scoreless tie in the highly anticipated first meeting between the Lake Tahoe schools as league opponents.

Lacking offensive fireworks, a senior defender for South Tahoe took it upon himself to deliver the game’s only score in the 61st minute. Martin and#8220;Chiqueand#8221; Sanchez powered in a 35-yard shot over the top of Truckee goalkeeper Ignacio Diaz, giving South Tahoe a 1-0 victory. Senior Kory DiGrande set up the winning shot with a short cross to Sanchez.

and#8220;It feels great to score the goal and getting another win for Tahoe,and#8221; said Sanchez, who didn’t start the game because he’s dealing with hip flexor and quad muscle injuries.

Truckee fell to 2-1 in the Northern 3A Sierra League and 4-3 overall, while South Tahoe improved to 3-0 in league and 6-1 overall.

In a scoreless first half, Truckee’s best chance to score came in the 34th minute when Easel Grass crossed a ball to the far side that Fernando Rodriguez headed toward the goal. However, South Tahoe keeper Peter Pielaet-Strayer tipped the shot over the top of the goal.

South Tahoe’s best opportunity came at 39:00 when freshman Derek Caro gathered an uncleared ball and blasted a shot off and over the cross bar. The Vikings outshot Truckee 5-4 in the first half.

The Vikings’ attack was impaired in the fourth minute when leading scorer Edgar Hernandez was carried off the field with an ankle injury. He didn’t return, and the Vikings found other offensive options.

and#8220;We have other great players, and it’s a whole team effort,and#8221; Sanchez said.

The offensive action picked up in the second half with South Tahoe outshooting Truckee 14-9. In the final minutes, Truckee pushed to tie the score and nearly got it when Bryan Reed sent a hard, low shot just past a diving Pielaet-Strayer but outside the far right post.
