Truckee cross country | Girls second at Retro Relays

Special to the Sun

Competing in one of the unique, relaxed environments in cross-country running last Thursday, the South Tahoe Retro Relays, the Truckee girls rallied to finish second behind the host Vikings.

The teams consisted of four members running 2-mile legs over hilly terrain before handing off to their respective teammates. The Truckee team of Ruby Wood, Kyla Burrill, Olivia Yale and Skyler Flora finished a close three seconds behind South Tahoe after 8 miles of racing.

Participating in the 2-mile girls individual event, Truckee sophomore Michaela Welsh earned her first career medal with a 10th-place finish. Other results included the Truckee boys finishing sixth in the varsity relay event.

The Wolverines return to action this Saturday at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto (Calif.), where they will compete against athletes from five different West Coast states.

Among the North Tahoe contingent, Brandon Hackett took second in the individual race and Forrest Smith placed seventh. Complete results were not available.
