Truckee girls basketball: Wolverines edge Damonte Ranch in home opener
TRUCKEE and#8212; The Wolverines beat 4A Damonte Ranch 39-38 in their first home game this past Thursday.
Truckee head coach Angelo Tenorio said he was proud of his team’s performance in the nonleague win, which improved Truckee’s record to 1-1 on the season.
and#8220;The girls played well as a team; all the girls worked hard and it was a total team effort,and#8221; Tenorio said.
Junior Megan Shalvis led the Wolverines in scoring with 14 points, followed by Brooke Griffin with eight.
and#8220;Megan played hard and under control, worked with her teammates and helped take care of the ball,and#8221; said Tenorio.
Truckee started the game with intensity, jumping out to a 12-8 lead by the end of the first quarter. Shalvis sparked the quick start with six points in the opening quarter, while Aleigh Krug contributed four points in the quarter and Mollie Askin two.
Both teams scored 10 points in the second quarter, six of which Truckee scored consecutively. Shalvis and Griffin put up four more points apiece, and Aly Coronado Smith added two to give the Wolverines a 22-18 lead at the half.
Truckee’s defense held Damonte Ranch to four points in the third quarter.
and#8220;They worked hard in practice and did all the little things to get turnovers,and#8221; Tenorio said.
Annie Rodriguez got on the board with two points, Shalvis and Griffin each bagged another two and Krug hit a free throw to push Truckee’s lead to 29-22 by the end of the third.
The final stretch of the game was filled with competition.
Amber Davies scored two points and Griffin made one from the line to put Truckee up 32-24. The Mustangs then proved they were not out of steam as they cut the lead down to three points with 4:07 remaining in the game.
Askin and Rodriguez each scored for the Wolverines as Damonte Ranch rallied back with four points of its own. Shalvis made two from the line and Griffin put in one to give Truckee a six-point advantage with little more than a minute left. The Mustangs again battled back to pull within two points.
With Damonte Ranch looking to tie the game, Shalvis came up huge with two blocked shots. The Mustangs received one more chance to tie it up at the line, but Emily Byrne made only one of her two free throws as Truckee escaped with the 39-38 win.
