Truckee girls run out of clock

The Truckee High varsity girls battled from behind Friday night against Fernely, but could not muster enough of a comeback to win.

With four minutes remaining in the game, after trailing for most of the contest, the Wolverines tied the score at 39. Then the ball refused to find the bottom of the net, and time steadily ticked away until none was left.

In the end the scoreboard read, 49-43, after Truckee’s Kelly Stephens nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer. But it was too little, too late. Felicia Tenorio led Truckee with nine points, followed by Stephens, who finished with eight. Jesse Lamm and Katie Malone each scored six, Erica Rice had five points, Katie Donaldson added four and Amanda Thorsby three.

In a game loaded with turnovers and missed shots by both teams, the Wolverines seemed to have found the scoring groove midway through the fourth quarter, but then went cold when points were needed most. Fernely capitalized on the opportunity, and sealed the victory with a couple of steals that led to easy layups.

Becky Murphy led Fernely with a game-high 15 points. Lacey LaVoie scored 13, April Shaw wound up with 10, and Kailauni Harry finished with eight.
