Sure, Mother Nature could have provided warmer and less-windy conditions. Nevertheless, high school golfers were treated to a couple of world-class golf course venues in the Division I-A state championships in Truckee on Monday and Tuesday.

The Wolverines, who served as hosts of he state championship tournament at Old Greenwood and Gray’s Crossing golf courses, finished fifth — three strokes away from fourth — in their first state tournament in years.

“It was a blast,” Truckee coach Kevin Waters said of the state tournament. “It was a lot of work, and the weather was not ideal, but everything went smoothly, and the courses were in great condition. It was a great tournament for us.”

Individually, Truckee senior Cody Tilton led the way with a sixth-place finish, carding an 82 and a 79 for a two-day score of 161. Tilton entered as the third-ranked golfer in the Northern Division I-A.

Austen Ancell of Pahrump Valley fired a 73 and a 77 to win the Division I-A title with a low score of 150. He was followed by Luke Logan of Boulder City (77, 75 — 152) and Charlie Magruder of Faith Lutheran (79, 77 — 156). Andrew Mendoza of Elko (80, 78 — 158) was the top Northern finisher in fourth.

In the team results, a deep and talented Faith Lutheran squad earned the Division I-A title with a low score or 811.

“Faith Lutheran was consistently solid. They’re deep,” Waters said of the Crusaders. “They’re deep. Their sixth guy is like the No. 2 on most teams.”

Following the Crusaders in a distant second was top Northern seed Elko, which came in at 870 (432, 438). The Indians were followed by Boulder City (438, 439 — 877), Pahrump Valley (436, 468 — 904) and Truckee (456, 451 — 907). Spring Creek was sixth (466, 445 — 911).

Aside from Tilton, Truckee senior Jordan Fereira finished 16th with a two-day of 170 (84, 86). Truckee’s Brandon Flora shot a 180 (90, 90), Airon Yarbroush shot a 198 (93, 105), Sam Willis 200 (95, 105) and Jake Lahr 222 (119, 103).

“Our team did very well,” Waters said. “Cody and Jordan competed in state last year, but it was a new experience for the rest of the team, and they performed well under pressure. I’m excited about the experience for the team. They had a great season.”
