Truckee golf team eliminated from post-season

A second straight fifth-place finish last Friday by the Truckee Wolverines golf team eliminated them from post-season contention a week before they host the rest of the NIAA 3A at Lahontan Golf Course.

The match at Lahontan starts at 11 a.m. today.

Last week at Edgewood in South Lake Tahoe, Junior Brett Poulin lead the Wolverines with an 89, followed by Juan Rosas and Barry Howard, both of whom turned in 92s.

Justin Draheim, for much of the season one of the league’s top ten golfers, recorded a 94, which may drop him out of the top 20 players in the league.

But Draheim and others will still have a chance to qualify for the state tournament, as the top 10 golfers in the NIAA 3A on teams not going to the state tournament can qualify as individuals.

And with 16 of the top 20 players on teams going to the state tournament, Draheim and junior Kyle Anderson have excellent chances of making the cut.

Heading into the final match of the season, Spring Creek leads the league, followed by Lowry, North Tahoe and Manogue.

Those four teams have also qualified for the state tournament, held this year at Arrow Creek Golf Course in Reno on May 14 and 15.

The league’s top three golfers and their averages over the first six matches are Lowry’s Nick Verner (75.2), Fernley’s Matt Leestma ( 77.4) and Spring Creek’s Scott Wurth ( 78).
