Truckee golf wins tourney

The Truckee High golf team moved into second place in the Northern 3A league standings with a first-place finish in the Yerington Tournament this past Friday.

The Wolverines won with a low score of 385. Lowry was second at 392, followed by Spring Creek (395), Fernley (399), Dayton (430) and Yerington (441). North Tahoe did not compete due to its participation in the Palmetto High School Golf Championship in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

“When we’re on, we’re going to be a threat to win every tournament,” said Jeff Froelich, Truckee’s head coach. “We just have to be there as a team.”

The Truckee team was on its game Friday, led by senior Danny Kruck, whose score of 72 was the second lowest of the tournament behind Fernley’s Brandon Dalton (67). Truckee’s Gavin Novotny shot a 76, Kevin Barchas 77, Pat Galvin 78, Matt Hardy 82 and Bryce Poulin 82.

Lowry is atop the league standings with 32 points. Truckee has 31 points, Fernley 29, Spring Creek 25, Dayton 21 and Incline 19. North Tahoe and Yerington each have 10 points.

Five tournaments remain before the State Championship on May 14-15, with the top three teams advancing.

The next tournament will be hosted by Lowry in Winnemucca. Tee off is 9 a.m.
