Truckee golf coach Jeff Froelich and his Wolverines have done the math. Finish ahead of Dayton in the final four tournaments of the season, and they qualify for Northern 3A regionals.

And only through regionals does a team earn a state championship berth.

and#8220;They have a team goal of qualifying for state, and they know what they have to do to get there,and#8221; Froelich said of his squad. and#8220;Allan (Nousiainen) and the rest of the boys want to go as a team.and#8221;

Nousiainen, a returning senior and Truckeeand#8217;s No. 1 golfer, is basically a lock to represent the Wolverines individually at the 3A state championship, as heand#8217;s currently leading the league with a 74.7 average.

and#8220;Heand#8217;s working hard at his game and takes it very seriously,and#8221; Froelich said of his team captain. and#8220;Heand#8217;s an excellent team leader. He does everything thatand#8217;s asked of him and more.and#8221;

But Nousiainen will need some help if the Wolverines are to finish third as a team ahead of Dayton in the remaining regular-season tournaments and#8212; theyand#8217;re conceding first and second place to Lowry and Spring Creek, both of whom return essentially the same teams from 2009.

Luckily for the Wolverines, a couple of golfers have stepped up behind Nousiainen, namely freshman Marc Biederman and senior Swedish foreign exchange student Oskar Ekbom, Froelich said.

and#8220;Weand#8217;ve been pleasantly surprised to have Marc Biederman join the team. Heand#8217;s turned out to be quite important to our lineup,and#8221; the coach said. and#8220;And Oskar has scored in the 80s the last two tournaments, so weand#8217;re very pleased with how heand#8217;s improved.and#8221;

The experience drops off after that, as seniors Alex Cramer, Parker Kalan and Robby Heck round out what is only a six-person team.

and#8220;The rest of the team hasnand#8217;t played a lot of competitive golf,and#8221; Froelich said. and#8220;But they listen to what I say and theyand#8217;re all improving.and#8221;

If Truckee fails to overtake third-place Dayton in the season standings and#8212; Dayton currently has 15 points to Truckeeand#8217;s 11 and#8212; the Wolverines will have to settle for sending their best individual qualifiers to state. Aside from Nousiainen, Froelich is hopeful that Biederman and Ekbom will be among the seven golfers from non-qualifying teams to earn a state berth.

Lowry, who had all six golfers post scores in the 70s at the last tournament, leads the league with 21 points, while Spring Creek is second with 18.
