Truckee golfers shoot for state championship

The THS varsity golf team held on to it’s third-place overall standing last Friday at the North Tahoe tournament held at Edgewood golf course.

The Wolverines finished second overall at the tournament. Thirteen teams competed in the event.

“I was pleasantly surprised with the Team’s performance,” said head coach Jeff Frelick. “No one on the team shot over a 90.”

Sophomore Wes Hollabaugh lead the team with an 80. Fellow sophomore Nathan Wrenn followed close behind with an 81.

“Our two sophomores are improving every week. They’re really coming of age. I’m excited for them to become really accomplished golfers in the next few years,” said Frelick.

Hollabaugh has averaged less than 80 strokes in his last three rounds.

Wrenns’ last three rounds have yielded scores of 83, 84, and 81.

Senior Kyle Anderson finished Friday’s tournament with a score of 84. Brett Poulin, another Truckee senior, finished with an 85.

Junior Kevin Waters finished the day with an 87.

The Wolverines are hosting a tournament today at Lahontan. Nine different 3A teams are set to compete.

After the tournament it will be decided who receives All League honors. They will also decide who is going to state.

The State tournament will be held on May 15, and 16 in Boulder City, Nev.

“We feel confident if we play our best, we could win the state 3A golf title,” said Frelick.
