Truckee grad named Defensive Player of Week for college football team
Truckee High grad Mitch Nelson was named American Pacific Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday for his Santa Barbara City College football team.
The 6-foot freshman safety, who was a key part of the Truckee football teamand#8217;s consecutive state championships in 2009 and and#8216;10, had a season-high 13 tackles with two interceptions on Saturday, Oct. 22 against L.A. Valley.
His interceptions came on back-to-back possessions in the second quarter. He returned the second one 46 yards after making the pick at his own 10.
In the opening quarter, Nelson ran 3 yards on a fake punt for a first down.
Nelson ranks seventh in the state with 66 tackles. He also has three interceptions, three pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and a safety.
The Santa Barbara Vaqueros played their final home game on Saturday. They finished 0-9 overall and 0-5 in conference play.
