Truckee grad named NAIA Player of the Week for Cal Maritime soccer

Truckee grad and Cal Maritime senior Will Akers was named the NAIA National Menand#8217;s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday.
Along with the NAIAand#8217;s Offensive Player of the Week, Veit Couturier of Embry-Riddle (Fla.), Akers was selected based on his performance from Sept. 19-25 and was chosen out of a pool of conference, independent and unaffiliated groupings within the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
Akers, a 5-foot-10 goalkeeper, guided the Cal Maritime Keelhaulers to as many wins in their first week as the last four years combined. In their 3-0 shutout of William Jessup (Calif.) on Sept. 20, Akers denied 14 shots on goal in 90 minutes of play.
In a 4-2 win at Pacific Union (Calif.) on Sept. 23, he posted four saves. Akers finished the week with 18 saves in 180 minutes of action. He ranks second in the NAIA in saves per game, with 9.00.
