Truckee graduate signs with Arizona

DARIN OLDE, Sierra Sun

Former Tahoe Truckee High School student Mike Detwiler will begin official training with the University of Arizona Wildcats football club this fall.

Detwiler, who graduated from Tahoe-Truckee High School in 1998, signed a letter of intent to play with the team after spending two seasons at Pasadena City College as a fullback, said Truckee principal Dennis LeBlanc.

Detwiler transferred from Pasadena City College to the University of Arizona in January.

“He’s there now practicing unofficially,” said Jerry Detwiler, Mike’s father. “I think he likes it [the club]; they’ve been real good to him.”

Detwiler was an all-league all-state football player in 1998.

“I’m not sure I expected Arizona,” said Tahoe Truckee High School athletic director and football coach Bob Schaffer, but playing for a NCAA Division 1-A school was no surprise. “Mike has a very good work ethic. He showed up every day at practice to get better. And he’s very good academically. It was only a question of his ambition.”

Although Mike was an exceptional player for the Wolverines’ football team, he is also remembered for his achievements as a varsity basketball and baseball player. Many recall his two free throws at the end of the second overtime to give the Wolverines a victory over rival North Tahoe in the 3A state finals in 1998.
