Truckee Junior Peewees drop a tough game against Reno Terrapins
The Junior Peewees lost a hard fought battle to the Reno Terrapins 27-18.
“This was probably the best game our kids have played,” said head coach Mike Harrity. “They played their butts off.”
The Truckee Junior Peewees began the first quarter with a 52-yard touchdown run by Graham Christian. The extra point failed, making the score 6-0. Later in the quarter the Terrapins answered with a touchdown of their own and made the extra point to bring the score to 7-6.
Truckee started to put together another drive with a great pass from quarterback Ty Englert to Shawn Howe that went for 45 yards. But the play was called back due to a penalty.
The Terrapins scored another touchdown in the second quarter and converted the extra point, giving them a 14-6 lead at the half.
“The Reno Terrapins played a very physical game,” said Peewees assistant coach Rich Stull. “They were well disciplined.”
In the third quarter the Truckee Junior Peewees got back on track with their longest running touchdown of the year, a 67-yard scamper by Graham Christian. The extra point failed, leaving Truckee down 12-14.
Truckee’s defense started stepping up with some big plays, recovering two fumbles ” one by Brian Ritchie and one by Calvin Svoboda.
The Peewees’ defense ” led by Jasper Fields, Hansi Stull, Andrew Metlenko, Brian Ritchie, Ryan Sewell, Nathan Keece, Wayne Page, Hayden Shaw, Derek Jones, Nick DeAragon and Chris Verue ” allowed Truckee to gain the lead back. Quarterback Ty Englert then capped off a nice drive with a 46-yard touchdown. Again, Truckee’s extra failed, leaving the score 18-12, Truckee, at the end of the third quarter.
The physical play of the Terrapins took its toll on the Truckee Junior Peewees.
“Our kids were pretty much whooped at the end of the game,” Harrity said. “Their physical play wore us down in the fourth quarter.”
The Terrapins put together a long scoring drive, which ate up a lot of time on the clock and gave them a 21-18 lead. A Truckee punt was then returned for another score. With a failed extra point, the score was 27-18. That’s the way it ended.
-“This was by far our hardest-fought game,” Harrity said. “I was really proud of the kids.”
