Truckee JV girls still unbeaten in league

The Truckee High junior varsity girls basketball team completed the first round of the season by defeating Fernley 37-25 on Saturday to remain undefeated in league play (8-0).

Traditionally a very tough match up, the Vaqueros proved they were one of the better teams in the Northern 3A. Tied at 15 at the half, the Wolverines’ defense held their opponent to only 10 second-half points while putting up 21 of their own.

Once again, Truckee’s offense was spread around with seven different players scoring. Michelle Hoehn led the team with 10 points, while Callan Finney and Katy Stephens added seven each. Katelynn Gadsby scored five points in the decisive fourth quarter, including a big 3-pointer.

The Wolverines stayed out of foul trouble for the first time all year, not allowing their opponent to get back in the game from the charity stripe. Solid defense from Addie Shaffer, Annie Rodriguez, Kati Murphy, Chelsea Cordell, Brooke Griffin and Katy Stephens was the key to stopping Fernley’s offense in the second half, said Truckee head coach Geoff Stephens.

The Truckee girls host the other two top teams in the league, Spring Creek and Lowry, on Friday and Saturday. Friday’s contest tips off at 3 p.m. and Saturday’s begins at 11 a.m.
