Truckee JV soccer | Girls off to 2-0 start
The Truckee High JV girls’ soccer team dominated the field in its season opener Saturday, Sept. 4 against Fallon.
The first goal was scored when Sydney Vandenberg launched a corner kick to Karina Rivera, who assisted Melisa Pena. The second goal was also scored off of a corner kick when Lauren Huesby banana kicked the ball past the Fallon goalie, which was followed into the net by Ashley Harris.
Defense held strong throughout the game as MVP Molly Redmond controlled the center of the field. Cassandra Sawyer also played tough as no goals were scored against Truckee. Truckee won 2-0.
During the second game against Sparks, Heather Fissel fired a corner kick to Sydney Vandenberg, who set up Shelby Matthews for the first goal of the game. Matthews also launched a corner kick in front of the goal setting up Karina Rivera, who wrestled the ball into the net. Sydney Vandenberg assisted Quinn Parker, who hit a long-shot goal from the 18-yard line.
MVP Maison Power led the defensive efforts of the team with her amazing traps and defensive control. No goals were scored against the Wolverines due to their strong defense and efforts of goalies Cassandra Sawyer and Cynthia Santana. Truckee won 3-0.
