The Nevada District 1 Little League All Star tournament began play at Governors Field in Carson City on Wednesday. This double-elimination tournament, which stretches to July 10, is the first stage for all teams hoping to compete in the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Penn., in August.

A total of 33 teams from Northern Nevada and the Lake Tahoe area will send their best players to compete in this exciting tournament featuring three age divisions, 9-10, 10-11 and 11-12.

Truckee Little League has three teams to the tournament this year. For the 9- and 10-year-olds, this will be many of the players’ first experience with tournament play. Manager Doug Flynn and coaches Craig Pruski and Charles Slusher have been working hard with the kids for the past 10 days to prepare them and they are expecting good things from their team.

The tournament marks the second for many of the 10-11 all-stars. Last year this team surprised several of the District 1 teams by putting together a strong run through the field and coming up one win short of playing for third place. Manager Steve Hogan and coaches Andy Bullion, Andy Rost and Craig Poe are hoping for even more from the team this year.

The third team traveling almost nightly to Carson City to compete is the 11-12 all-star team. This is the last time each of these players will have a chance to play for the District 1 title as they advance to Babe Ruth or Senior League next year.

Last year, as 11-year-olds, this team lost its first two games but then went on an incredible seven-game win streak and took home third place for the tournament. Manager Ken Streit and coaches Craig Wingard and Tom Just are looking to better last year’s performance and become the first Truckee team to ever win the District 1 All-Star Tournament and advance to the Nevada State Tournament.

The tournament is free of charge to attend.
