Truckee local takes Oregon ski competition

Staff Reports

Truckee local Mike Akay competed at Mt. Hood March 1 through 3 at the Winter Games of Oregon Akay was only one of two skiers to enter all three events at Ski Bowl West and he made the podium for two of them. The events were speed skiing, all-mountain extreme skiing and Super G.

The weekend started off with a speed skiing race on Friday night. Despite a foggy night course dusted with fresh snow, Akay beat the entire field of 50 racers on a pair of 186 centimeter Atomic giant slalom skis to win the overall gold medal. Most entrants were equipped with speed skis of 212 to

225 centimeters.

On Saturday morning under bluebird skies with fresh powder,

Akay took third overall in the all-mountain extreme event. The contest was his first extreme event ever and he was thankful for the fresh snow. He also really enjoyed having the side of a mountain opened for the first time just

for the event.

“I didn’t go as big as the younger guys, but I tried to get more airs, do grabs and get real close to the trees,” he said.

On Sunday, he finished ninth in the Super G on a very fast course but was disappointed he didn’t make the podium for the third time in a row.
