Truckee nordic dominates in Mammoth

After a long and sleepy four-hour, 30-minute bus ride down to Mammoth Lakes to a 6k classic race for the THS nordic ski team, the other schools probably wished that the bus took an extra hour so they would miss the races and be disqualified. But no such luck. The boys’ and the girls’ teams made quick work of everyone else.

For the girls’ squad, they took seven of the top 10 spots- plus 12th- and just missed the fourth, fifth and ninth spots. Kara LaPoint took first with a time of 23:46.4, followed by Maisha Goodpaster in second at 24:48.8, Lindsay Collin in third at 25:52.9, Kati Clark in sixth at 26:41.2, Whitney Prosor in seventh at 27:23.6, Alexandra O’Neil in eighth at 27:26, Kayla Evans in 10th at 28:37.9 and then Caitlin Oats in 12th at 30:00.4.

The boys’ team dominated just as well with five of the top six spots. Andrew Van Blarigan took first at 20:24.4 followed by Joaquin Goodpaster in third at 21:28.7, Matt Gelso in fourth at 22:12.5, Owen Wright in fifth at 24:04.2 and Sam Sterling in sixth at 24:06.3. Doug Coombs came in 11th at 25:54.2, Tyler Wright was in 17th at 27:08.7 and Ben Kantz came in 20th at 28:56.5.

The track was a challenging course, with icy spots and ruts. It was the first 6k classic race for several of the skiers and all of them completed the race.

The team didn’t make it back to Truckee until 7 p.m., 14 hours after they left. Despite the trip and the missed day of school, they still had practice the next day.
